A common mistake I see engineers making during interviews is falling into the trap of using “we” instead of clearly highlighting your specific role and accomplishments.  I get it, you’re trying to not be boastful, you’re trying to come across as a “team player”, but your interviewer wants to know what YOU specifically have done and how that knowledge fits into their team.

Let’s dive into the importance of distinguishing between “I” and “we” to truly shine in your job interviews and applications.

 

🔹 Highlight Your Individual Impact: When discussing your engineering experiences, it’s crucial to articulate your individual contributions. While teamwork and collaboration are important, employers want to understand your unique skills, expertise, and achievements. By using “I” instead of “we,” you demonstrate your ability to take ownership of tasks, solve problems independently, and deliver tangible results.
